Photoshooting with Tate Millinery Part 1

Hello everyone,

last weekend I took a superlong drinve (20 minutes;-) to a neighbour town and shot with lovely Karen from Tate Millinery and her just as lovely husband Andrea! We photographed around 30 hats (estimated number - I lost count because it were SO MANY beautifull hats!) within 3 hours (plus and hour for hair and make up and maybe another one for cupcakes).

So consider this part 1 of at least 4-5 parts full of awesome hats! Keep your eyes on the Online Shop as well and keep in mind: Most of those hats are customizable! So if you think by yourself "Oh, I love this hat, but it wouldn´t go with the clothes I have" - send a message to Tate Millinery to explore the options available! For your convenience I added the links straight to the hat below the picture.

Did I promse too much? Those hats are truely awesome with great details and made by hand! Keep your eyes peeled for more!

The 1950s Face

Hello everyone,

last week we time travelled to the 1940s, now we are doing a jump Forward and go to the 1950s. The 50s were a lot about Pastell Colors. Eye-Shadow, lipstick, Dresses. Foundation was more common than in the 40s and the Eyeliner made it´s big and sophisticated entry. Eyebrows were more defined, even exagerated with high arches (which I can´t do as mine are rather straight;-). I used a pink eyeshadow on most of my lid and a salmon-ish one in the crease. I used a pinkish blusher and a pink lip-cream with a blue-ish undertone.

Products I used (mostly MUA unless stating otherwise):

Face: Catrice Prime and Fine, Matte Perfect Foundation, Hide and Conceal, Cover and Conceal, Matte Perfect powder, Essence Cherry Blossom Girl Blush.

Eyes: Nyx Jumbo Eye Pencil "Milk", Pretty Pastels Palette, Eyeliner Shade 1, Essence I love extreme Mascara, P2 Eyebrow Express Stylish Blond", Extreme Color Eyeliner "rich Brown", Essence Guerilla gardening eyebrow Mascara "my Piece of land"

Lips: Essence Guerilla Gardening lip cream "Mission flower"

How Herr Mann changed his marital status and other fleamarket stories...

Hello everyone,

yesterday I went to a fleamarket but to my disapointment I only hunted down one souvenier brooch. However keeping in mind there was another one in the city today I figure I´d strike gold there instead. Oh how damn right I was!!!!!

You probaly saw Herr Mann (left side) in pin up pics of mine before. I once found him on a fleamarket for (I think) 8 or 10 €. He spent at least one year living with me as a bachelor.... Until today. I found those 3 black 50s poodles that I asume to be from the same brand (Herrman, hence Herr Manns name) because they wear the same ribbon. The big one is in very good condition, the small ones have flaws, but for 10 €for the three of them including the basket I couldn´t say no! So meet Herr Mann, Frau Mann (birth name Mademoiselle Femme) and their darling daughters Colette and Paulette.

As if having a bunch of French 50s poodles wouldn´t be enough I found this darling French lecture book for 50 Cent (and now it is once for all settled that I need to do a French-themed shooting including booklet and poodles), a handbag for 7 € (big enough to put a book in + everything else I need), the ABC book for boys AND girls for 1 € each (seruiously... I think a couple shooting with John is underway) and a book on good behaviour for 1 € - finally I can get a read on how to fix stocking seams in public in a appropriate way.

All of the things I got before would be enough to make me absolutely thrilled and cosider this a more than sucessfull fleamarket visit but it goes on.... This set of  1950s snack dishes for ALTOGETHER 2 (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) €. I would have happily paid 1-2 € per DISH!

And on the way home we found this huuuuge tuscany themed 50s painting in a faux gold frame for 10€. We still have free space on our bed room wall. Well, not anymore once we put up this one!!!

I have rearely been that lucky and I have rarely spent so much money and got so much for it during one fleamarket visit. And the best thing. It was 5 minute walking distance and so HUGE!!!!!

Book Review: "Retro Makeup - Techniques for Applying the Vintage Look"

Hello everyone,

A while ago I posted about Lauren Rennells new book "Retro Makeup - Techniques for Applying the Vintage Look". Most of you already know her as the author of "Vintage Hairstyling", my personal bible for Vintage hair :-)

I saw it and thought I better get it, based on the damn good impressions I have from Vintage Hairstyling Edition 1 + 2 (and before you ask: YES, it is important to have both editions bec
ause there are different stylings in it!)

So how do I find it? Is it worth buying and what do you actually get?

This book covers a lot of make up history. It introduced various make up brushes that you can use to reproduce or re-interprete the styles of the book. This is very very good for make up novices! The book covers the history of our most beloved cosmetic articles such as lipstick, blush, eye liner, mascara etc. While those contained no news for me it was still interesting to read and also included some nice novelty facts.

Every decade introduced features 3 different looks and how to reproduce them. None of it seems particulary tricky. Apart from the 60s eye liner styles they seem almost too easy to me, but than again I have been doing my own hair and make up for shootings for 7 years. It is very nice for reference though.
Things I felt were missing: I felt that something on how to emphasize your individual face form using blush or/and highlighter was missing. There is a short part on it, but that is not really much. I would have loved to have more stuff such as articles from old magazines or/and beauty books in it. I have some where they display makeup morning routines in detail and I LOVE that. In the book is one written description from the 50s. Besides that I have nothing to complain. ;-)

I really enjoyed: The beautifull photos, the breakdown on brushes, the part on what ladies had on their vanities, the "novelty" trivias in it.

Is it worth buying? Do you have the two Kevyn Aucoin books on Make up and Mike Browns books "The 1940s Look" and "The 1950s Look"? If so you don´t necessarily need this book.

However it is nice to have. The make ups are easy to reproduce. The advice is helpfull and if you have not that much knowledge about era-specific looks it is wellworth the money! I say: BUY!

Where can you get it?

An interesting new book!

Did you like this one?

Than I have good news for you.....

Content:
Moving forward another decade from his successful The 1940s Look Mike Brown takes an in depth look at the the 1950s - decade of the Coronation, the conquest of Everest, the Festival of Britain, the Suez Crisis, and Britain's first Wimpy Bar.
Britons turned their backs on the privations of the drab war years. The second Elizabethan age had arrived and with it came optimism for a bright future. Breezes of exciting new fashions ruffled through the wardrobes of the nation. Daring styles from overseas gusted into British homes - the Hawaiian shirt and denim jeans from the USA, and a new hair-do called the 'crew cut'.
The winds of fashion soon veered to the Continent with the rise of chique Italian and French styling. But an eclectic British style began to emerge from these influences and with it a whole new breed - the teenager. Premier Harold Macmillan famously summed up the mood of the fifties when he told the country: 'you've never had it so good'.
Read all about the new synthetic wonder fabrics, the Trapeze dress and pedal pushers, teenage heart-throbs, the Teddy Boys' quiff and DA, and drain pipe trousers.

I ordered it on amazon and expect a lot from it. I loved the 40s one! No setting patterns for hair, but fabulous descriptions and lots of pictures, clippings from vintage mags etc...  Not to mention the great tipps last time! I say don´t miss it.
