Wet Set

Hello everyone,

what´s a girl to do if her shooting has been postphoned, but her hair is already wet set with foam rollers over night? Well, in my case: I took some photos of the setting pattern and the results ;-)

Excuse the photos not beeing the best of quality, I just took them quickly with my mobile phone...

Let´s see the bright side: By the time the shooting is beeing done i already know that I master this look ;-)

On Thursday I will leave for a vacation in Bruges/Belgium and I look forward to all the fun shootings and project I have planned for the time I am returning. Yay!

Playing with my hair.... 1 pin curl set - 4 looks

during fall break I managed to get my hair cut and last Saturday I started a new attempt to bleach a streak into my hair. It worked wayyyyyy better than last time! Today beeing a day off I got to play with it....

And here are the results...

No. 1: Front rolls with open hair in the back...

 No. 2: This is not sooooo much different from look 1. In this version I curled the hair in the back a bit under and pinned them together

 No.3: When Iam lazy I like to go with 60s look. Some teasing of the crown and Ian ready to go!

No.4: And often I´ll just make a 60s updo when the hair is loosing curl and I just wanna opt for something easy :-)

Book Review: "Retro Makeup - Techniques for Applying the Vintage Look"

A while ago I posted about Lauren Rennells new book "Retro Makeup - Techniques for Applying the Vintage Look". Most of you already know her as the author of "Vintage Hairstyling", my personal bible for Vintage hair :-)

I saw it and thought I better get it, based on the damn good impressions I have from Vintage Hairstyling Edition 1 + 2 (and before you ask: YES, it is important to have both editions bec

ause there are different stylings in it!)

So how do I find it? Is it worth buying and what do you actually get?

This book covers a lot of make up history. It introduced various make up brushes that you can use to reproduce or re-interprete the styles of the book. This is very very good for make up novices! The book covers the history of our most beloved cosmetic articles such as lipstick, blush, eye liner, mascara etc. While those contained no news for me it was still interesting to read and also included some nice novelty facts.

Every decade introduced features 3 different looks and how to reproduce them. None of it seems particulary tricky. Apart from the 60s eye liner styles they seem almost too easy to me, but than again I have been doing my own hair and make up for shootings for 7 years. It is very nice for reference though.

Things I felt were missing: I felt that something on how to emphasize your individual face form using blush or/and highlighter was missing. There is a short part on it, but that is not really much. I would have loved to have more stuff such as articles from old magazines or/and beauty books in it. I have some where they display makeup morning routines in detail and I LOVE that. In the book is one written description from the 50s. Besides that I have nothing to complain. ;-)

I really enjoyed: The beautifull photos, the breakdown on brushes, the part on what ladies had on their vanities, the "novelty" trivias in it.

Is it worth buying? Do you have the two Kevyn Aucoin books on Make up and Mike Browns books "The 1940s Look" and "The 1950s Look"? If so you don´t necessarily need this book.

However it is nice to have. The make ups are easy to reproduce. The advice is helpfull and if you have not that much knowledge about era-specific looks it is wellworth the money! I say: BUY!

Rachel Zoe, this is no Burlesque Look. Here is my advice on it!

the Burlesque Movie did not even officially start in Germany yet. From what I have heard it´s not too Burly anyway so Iam not sure whether I will give it a try. However what I do know for sure is this...

This is in no way Burlesque Style... Or Retro in any way. Stylist Rachel Zoe tries to give advice on Burlesque style:

Nice try, but in my oppinion a fail. One can tell she is not at all familiar with it. This is just one of the three videos and they all don´t look in the least burly. It´s just making cash on the burly craze.

Here is my cup of tea on what a Burlesque/Pin up Lady wears - and warning... It contains no studs or leather jackets or even too short skirts or dresses... And I can assure you I won´t make one cent with my advice ;-)

Keep it modest and classy for every day in this georgous dresses by Pin up Couture and Dixie Fried (available in Germany via http://www.buy-unlike.com) You will still turn heads, but in a work-safe way!

A hairdo I was sporting earlier this year when going to a Burlesque show. Basically I rolled all my hair and pinned it, put on a feathery decoration and added fake eye lashes with rhinestones for some extra glamour.

Optionally you can add a cute fascinator, feather piece and gloves. I find that etsy, dawanda and ebay is offering a huge range of those if you are not handy with a glue gun and can´t make a pretty feather headpiece yourself.

New Words on my thought about style. This time about colours and fashions

I wanna add more to my post about finding you style.... So... I just do so :-D

There are two points about style and fashion that are difficult: 1. how to differ from what is promoted 2. and what actually suits you.

I can’t give you fool-proof advice, but some points of view that I have: Fashion is not that important.It can give you a new idea and It can be a help to find and try something you like and purchase it. However you don’t have to do something just because it is in a magazine. Finding your STYLE is more important than FASHION. I often read modern fashion magazines and often cut out pages for reference. It could be that I like an particular outfit and plan to do something like that myself. I like the styling of something. Or maybe I just see a combination of patterns or colors that I had not thought of working together before and think it looks interesting. It goes into my little folder of ideas and I can get back to it whenever I want and have no idea what to wear.

The section of what is hot and what’s not is not that much of interest for me, unless it promotes something I like anyway (let’s say sailor-slacks are all the rage for fall. I don’t care whether they will be it in 6 months from now cause I will always love them and if they show an affordable piece I’m likely to check it out ;-). What do I care what the fashions victims wear? I wear whats flattering on ME.

I couldn´t care less that it is not in fashion to own funny souvenier brooches from the 50s. I just like them, regardless wether you like them. If it ever becomes a trend and I can buy something cute and cheap in the style I will. If it doesn´t I will still like them.

Try things to find out what flatters you the most. If in doubt take photos of you in an outfit to see whether it works. In our age of digital cameras it’s easy to do – even with a self-mode function. Also keep looking in magazines, both vintage and new. If someone in there has a figure similar to yours you can see a tendency of what looks good and what doesn’t (however judge that for yourself. Don’t let the editors tell you what to think). Hint: If something makes a size zero model look unflattering, it will look just as bad or worse on you.

By the time the fashion editors tell everyone that you´re totally out wearing anything sailor styled you can happily donate your cute clothes to me. ;-)

Color schemes are confusing. Really. Up to today I have no idea wether Iam a summer,spring, fall or winter type. There seems to be no real classifications for blue-grey-green eyed girls that colour their grey and brown hair red and have a pale skin with olive undertones. If you are a in between type yourself this is my idea of what you should do: Go to a fabric store and hold different colored fabric to your face. Does it make your eyes and hair pop = that’s one of the colours you should wear. Do you look worn out and tired when you hold that color to your face? Stay away from that one. This is also a good hint which colours of eye shadow flatter you. When in doubt I put samples of eyeshadow on my hand and hold it next to my eyes. I have my power colous that make me feel extra good. When I have a stressfull week I use those colours a lot. Especially a powerfull red can do the trick for me. If you feel good you can wear whatever and anyone will consider you stunning.

A while ago I started to wonder why my eyes are more green on some photos and on some they are not at all. I found out it was a matter of colour and light. Imagine this. For 27 years I thought my eyes are a plain grayish blue. Either I just wore the wrong colours or they changed colour over the years. It’s up to you to judge.

Let´s bump it - with bumpits

There are days where I´m just lazy and can´t be bothered wih setting my hair. However I have the straightest and most boring hair one can imagine. And if I atempt to do a sleek 60s style and tease and tease and tease my hair and spray and spray and spray it with hairspray it will just sink down again within the next 2 hours. This SUCKS. So I was curious when I heard about bumpits. They are not available in Germany, but I got them on ebay for just a few bucks. What do those thingies look like and how do you use them anyway? And here comes my review. (excuse the bad photo, but I was just about to leave for shopping, so I just snapped a self in the bathrom mirror). They are indeed easy to use. I just teased my hair, attached the bumpit under it and smoothed the hair over the bumpit. What I didn´t see however was that my hair was a bit too short for the huuuuge bumpit I took, hence I realised that one could see it a bit if you saw my back. By that time I was in town though and didn´t give a damn.

Next time I will use the one that is one size smaller or take a bigger hair-section. Besides that I find it fab. My hair stayed up and up and up eventhough I was changing in the dressingroom and pulled the sweater over my head. In my oppinion it is a good investment for lazy hair days!!! And also if you wanna go for a 60s look or an updo.

The next thing I wanna test is Benefits Dr. Feelgood vs. Shills Miss Perfect. They are supposed to do the same, let´s see who´ll be the winner.
